Going Green Inn lobby and floors

At The Common Man Inn & Restaurant, we are very conscious about preserving our natural resources and harnessing the power of nature to help power our Inn.

Our Claremont property is an excellent example of the ultimate form of recycling-repurpose, reuse, and reinvent! These 100+ year old buildings were abandoned and left for waste. ReArch Company used a variety of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) approved products in the construction of our facilities. These include, but are not limited to: insulation, flooring, paint, furniture, carpet, ceiling panels, plumbing, and lighting fixtures.

Both Alex Ray and Rusty McLear have a passion for reuse in their establishments. The following items are fun ways we kept the interior design environmentally friendly:

  • The bar in our Common Man Restaurant was recycled from Polcari's Restaurant which was located in the North End of Boston
  • Flooring in the restaurant, and some sleeping rooms, are maple floorboards that were previously part of the John F. Kennedy (JFK) JFK Coliseum in Manchester. Last used in 1986, the flooring was covered by the facility's ice arena. We reused 20,000 square feet in our facility.
  • Our Inn front doors were salvaged from a home in Middlebury, VT.
  • Iron railings along the top of the stairs in the main lobby of the Inn were reclaimed from a farm on Wilmot Flat, NH.
  • The wood paneling in our Inn lobby is made from doors salvaged from a house in Portsmouth, NH.

Other green initiatives at the Inn, Restaurant, and within our entire Common Man Family include:
  • Using an environmentally-friendly laundering process and giving guests the option of re-using towels and cutting down on the number of linen changes, which reduces water and detergent use.
  • Recycling program encouraging our guests and staff to recycle all plastic, aluminum and glass.
  • Water-saving shower heads in every guest room.
  • Fluorescent, energy-saving light bulbs throughout the Inn, Restaurant and many of our locations across New Hampshire.
  • In 2008, 750 square feet of solar panels were installed on the roof of the Common Man Inn & Spa in Plymouth, and are used to power the hot water heater responsible for all water use in the inn including guest rooms, the Fosters Boiler Room kitchen and The Spa at the Inn.
  • For more than 10 years, we've supported local farmers by purchasing and serving their produce whenever available.
  • Using recycled paper for our pizza boxes, napkins, and menus and using an environmentally-friendly printing process.
  • Our Common Man family bio-diesel delivery van, which delivers products to all of our locations, runs on our own recycled fry oil.
  • We use bio-diesel to supplement heating oil at our Common Man restaurant and our Common Man Company store, both in Ashland.
  • Our Common Man family maintenance shop is heated by 100% bio-diesel.
